An Array of Eateries

Kloof Street has become the number one place to visit if your stomach is grumbling in Cape Town. There are a variety of places to eat that cater for a wide range of taste sensations. There is ample accommodation for the tourists who swarm to Cape Town in the summer months to enjoy all the festivities and sunshine. Locals can drive through to Kloof Street, as it can be accessed from two main roads that traverse the famous Cape mountain range.

It is recommended that hungry guests park and walk down the street to get an idea of the options available. If you are new to the Cape and would like to try something along the seafood route, there are two popular restaurants.

Ocean Basket has a reputation for serving some of the best seafood available. Their hospitality is also well known. The Kloof Street branches have options for sit-down or take away. They serve everything from calamari to line-fish of the day. They are known for their enormous platters that can serve from one person up to six.

Further up the road towards the mountain, is another seafood restaurant that opened up within the last few years. Jimmy Killer Prawns has branches in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. The meaning behind the word “Killer” in the title has to do with both the size and the spiciness of their prawns. They are famous for their hot sauce and have many spicy dishes. This includes their North African spicy sauce, which douses prawns that have been flamed in liquor. Not all of their dishes are spicy. They make sushi and steak for those who don’t fancy prawns.

Part of Kloof Street’s buzz is the studio that is placed right in the centre of it all. Long Street Studios is the building where South Africa’s Free T.V. Channel, e-TV, is produced. A lot of advertisements are also shot at the studio. The buzz works its way from the centre out and into the street, where local celebrities can be seen drinking coffee and enjoying the Cape Town sun.

If you are looking for Mediterranean food, you should visit Zucca. It’s a small restaurant for all Italian lovers. Their menu consists of gorgeous pastas with true napoleon sauce and olives. The ambiance is small-town Italian with stunning decorations that make you feel like you are sitting in Italy. They have wood-fire oven cooked pizzas as part of their menu.

There is another restaurant between Zucca and Ocean Basket that does mouth-watering gourmet pizzas. Da Vinci Pizza opened up earlier this year, and is a branch from the famous original in Harfield Village. Don’t think that this is your ordinary pizza place with Hawaii and Margherita pizzas. They have a variety of toppings, with their all time specialty being a cranberry and Camembert cheese pizza. The chef recommends adding bacon as an extra topping to enhance the flavour. Their innovative table clothes are part of the attraction for families and students. Since the name is Da Vinci, after the artist, the table clothes are plain brown paper. All customers get a set of crayons and are encouraged to draw on the tables. The best drawings are placed on the wall.

Café Vespa also has some novelty value. This cocktail bar has Vespa bikes for rental. The café invites tourists to take the bikes out for a drive around the city. Once the evening sets in, tourists and locals alike are encouraged to sit out on the balcony and enjoy the view with one of the cocktails or special coffees available. They have a Tapas menu of salads, skewers and sandwiches. Their cocktails are a delight, the popular one being a chocolate martini. Ask the bartender to add a pinch of chilli to the chocolate martini for a bit of flare.

Kloof Street has its own private multimedia tertiary education centre, City Varsity, situated at the bottom of the road. Here students from all over South Africa join the buzz of the street, adding to its creative flair. City Varsity courses include film school and animation. It’s the only private creative tertiary school in Cape Town.

With a large amount of businessmen meeting clients at the various coffee shops, actors striking deals with film makers and students to ensure that restaurants have reasonable prices, the street has become a community all of its own. People live, eat and work in Kloof. The youthful vibe of the road makes Kloof Street one of the most popular roads in Cape Town.

Kloof Street is becoming one of the popular places for breakfast, lunch and supper. It is ideally situated for businessmen, families and tourists. The atmosphere is relaxed and the view is gorgeous. With good company, a beautiful view and exquisite food, life doesn’t get any better.

Hard Rock Cafe in Puerto Banus

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Recently opened in November 2009, the Hard Rock Cafe in Puerto Banus was long awaited and ex pats were buzzing with news that such a hip restaurant was coming to town. TGIs was the nearest competitor and lack lustre staff there, overpriced menus and a tired interior meant that the Hard Rock Cafe had a very good chance of being a hit.

I went to the Hard Rock Cafe mid November and was impressed with the waitresses at the door. They spoke fluent English and Spanish, asked if we wished to be seated in a non smoking area and asked how old the children were so they could establish how many childrens’ menus that we would need. The childrens’ menus are for ten year olds and below but they gave one to my son who was thirteen so this age is not fixed. The decor is very hip.

Comfy brown booths or tables to sit in with pillars hung with guitars signed by rockstars in glass cases. A long black bar is at the end of the Hard Rock Cafe serving amazing cocktails priced at 7.50-8.50 euros. It sounds a lot but they are large and there is a separate cocktail menu as the variety is huge. The selection of non alchololic cocktails is very small.

We ordered the burgers that start from 9 euros. I ordered mine well done as in Spain medium often means “see the blood.” However here well done meant slightly charred so I would go for medium next time. A small but tasty portion of chips, rather soft looking salad but this meal is all about the burgers. They are large and excellent quality. We didn’t have any desserts but they are priced at around 7 euros.

The childrens’ menu has a good selection of food, burgers, hot dogs, chicken and for 6.95 euros you get a main meal, a drink and a dessert, a chocolate sundae. My eight year old was so full after her burger that she skipped the dessert.

Within the Hard Rock Cafe you also have the Hard Rock Cafe shop that sells t-shirts, keyrings and teddy bears. My daughter bought a groovy beanie baby with a jacket, mohican hair style, earring and Hard Rock Cafe logo for 16 euros. Expensive. The t-shirts are around 27 euros. Mostly aimed at adults there are a couple of designs for children.

The service was good, but we went around 6.30pm so the restaurant was very quiet. I thought the price of the meal for Puerto Banus was excellent, and the big screens playing music videos was a nice touch. A good night out and a welcome addition to the wealth of restaurants currently in Puerto Banus.

Why Coffee At Cafes And Certain Places Doesn’t Taste Good

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Do you know why coffee at certain places totally tastes bad or it doesn’t taste as good as it sounds? I mean you look at the menu and it looks great in the menu and when it reaches your table it totally looks… not so nice?

There are many reasons why this happens. In my opinion the main reason why this happens is cafe owners know nothing about coffee and they open their cafe for one main reason… PROFIT… yes profit.. thats the main reason why they open it.. there is one thing that they lack.. PASSION.. passion is the most important factor and they lack of it.. So they don’t really bother what they coffee taste like or so…

The second reason is coffee owners or barista working in that coffee shop don’t taste their own coffee… Yes this is like chef who don’t taste their own food who ignore the remark that their food taste bad or I could put it in one word.. sucks.. Just like what you see in Kitchen Nightmares on tv.. Chef won’t admit that their food taste bad.. they have a certain ego.

The third reason is the barista have no proper training. They just take new barista and do not train them properly so they do not know how to make coffee the correct way or using te proper technique to make coffee. Its like a person who do not know how to drive is driving for the first time.. and the owner don’t really bother to give the young barista training.

Azuri Cafe in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Azuri Cafe is a great, tiny Middle Eastern restaurant on the corner of 51st street and 10th avenue in New York City. The entire space is taken up by five small tables, some chairs and a small kitchen. Usually there’s three employees working at any one time. They all cook and serve customers and really know how to make some great food.

Azuri is known for their great falafel offerings whether you order it inside a pita or get it in platter form. On many top falafel lists of New York City, you’ll see Azuri at the top. They also have many other menu options including shwarma, gyro and of course french fries. You really can’t go wrong with ordering any of the common items on the menu.

The owner of Azuri who is always there, manning the cash register, is very serious about his restaurant and offerings. He never seems to be in a good mood and won’t usually give you a smile or be that friendly. But anyone who goes to Azuri knows this about him and expects it, so it doesn’t bother many people.

If you’re looking for some good authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in a relaxed setting, check out Azuri Cafe. You can order for delivery through Seamless Web, take-out or sit there and eat. The atmosphere isn’t that great, but if you’re on the go, it’s a nice quick option for a hearty meal. Enjoy your food at home or at the office would be just as good.
