Last Minute Travel & People You Meet

It was a filthy night; a constant cold drizzle gusted from sea to shore. The articulated freight, parked in neat rows in the harbour overnight park up were floodlit by huge arc lights glaring through the sheet of water ever falling from the invisible sky.

We were waiting for the morning too. Our camper was wedged in between two of the mighty artics; one with it’s chiller humming loudly. Before we retired to our uneasy slumber a visit to the cafe bar was decided on.

It was a drab interior; divided into two areas. The bar counter with tables and chairs one side; a pool table and waiting area, for the travellers sailing on the Midnight ferry back to New Haven on the other. The customers, mainly truckers were gathered in groups, round the pool table; and hunched on the chairs drinking and smoking. Some foot passengers sat patiently, in the assigned waiting area.

We had no sooner settled at one of the tables with our drinks, when an amiable faced man approached us, holding a glass and a nearly full bottle of wine.

“Would you mind if I joined you?” he enquired;and lowered himself into a chair as we made the expected consent. He was tall, late fifties and slightly bald with a paunch; dressed in a suit, shirt and, I think, a bow tie. He had about him a slightly rakish air.

This was Tim. We had seen him, in passing, on the ferry over; and, it transpired, he was returning on the midnight boat, having come over to “see the new dock at Dieppe”.

It seemed a bizarre way to spend a wet Winter night but, as conversation progressed, I formed the impression that he was a man with time on his hands.

He was a charming, erudite sort of bloke; quite drunk but he hid it well. During our hour long chat he told us of his former job as a top exec. in an international bank. He had travelled all over the world and now had retired to live in New Haven.

He also regaled us with his strong radical opinions about life in general. He was particularly incensed at the amount of tax that the government took from him and the general populace; maintaining that the Chancellor only ‘needed’ 10p off everybody every day to run the country, but, instead, took 86p.

During the chat he offered, twice, to top up my tea from the wine bottle.

Some of his more lurid opinions included a foolproof method of disciplining our schoolkids, based on the disciplinary regime of Chinese prisoners; who were very quiet and well behaved, due to a ‘points’ system of punishments; starting with point 1; a days withdrawal of food, progressing through floggings to point 13, which was execution; unlucky for some!

I could foresee problems with health and safety issues. and, can’t you see the Mums, trying to smuggle junk food over the school perimeter?

He also, contrarily, thought the youth of Britain should have a revolution, because he was an ‘anarchist’ at heart.

And that the world should have a ‘benign’ President/Dictator, of whom he should be the first.

It was all highly entertaining; especially on a rainy night in Dieppe.

We parted company and left Tim getting involved with a low key ‘incident’ that had been developing between four ‘Douanes’ and two men, regarding passports, or the lack of them. The last we heard from Tim as we departed was a tirade against ‘bureaucracy’. But the Douanes appeared unmoved.

Libation, A Bitter Alchemy

Deirdre Heekin wrote the book I wish I had written. I love her book, named “Libation, A Bitter Alchemy.” It means to pour, as in an offering. When Deirdre pours me a glass of wine, it feels like a celebration before the fruit reaches my lips.

I was hooked from the first line. Deirdre’s book is a voyage into the heart of an artist, reader, writer, world traveler, perfumer, gardener, cook and wine maker.

I have the good fortune to have met her. She is beautiful, from the inside out. Then, I tasted her wine. It is as sublime as she is.

Later, I watched her chef husband, Caleb, prepare the vibrant, bright green, organic wild leeks and dandelion greens. Dining at the big wooden table in their Woodstock, Vermont café was like eating at home, only better.

Within minutes, their fresh home grown produce is transported from their Barnard, Vermont garden to their Italian-New England, trattoria – osteria pane e salute.

Deirdre and Caleb’s cafe is the true meaning of farm to fork, grape to table. I hope to return for one more taste of Caleb’s cooking and another sip of wine–the perfect marriage. I long to pluck grapes from their farm, taste wine and greens in their cafe and fly to Tuscany, all at the same time.

I did not want to leave Woodstock, Vermont. As I boarded my flight from Burlington to Sarasota, Florida, I opened Deidre’s newest book and started to read. Later, I did not even notice that we had landed. I had read it, word for word, and began again.

(I want to tell Deirdre that this is one of the best books about travel, wine and LOVE that I have ever read).

As a former book reviewer for a national magazine and a literary magazine, I have found it easy to discuss the content of books. I cannot describe “Libation” and do it justice. I only urge you to read it and then buy it for everyone you know who shares a passion for bread and wine, beauty, nature and life.

Eating Out in The Seventies

The most popular restaurants in the Seventies were places to see and to be seen in. The newly opened Langan’s Brasserie in Stratton Street, on the site of the old Coq D’Or, fitted this bill perfectly. Peter Langan, the alcoholic genius who created the restaurant, hosted preview dinners, leading up to the opening in 1976. The ambience was enticing, donated fine art splattered the walls, David Hockney designed the menus, but in those days, the food was the least interesting thing about the restaurant. It was the famous clientele that attracted the café society in droves. On one given weeknight, you could spot deranged members of the British aristocracy, Hockney, David Bailey, Jack Nicholson, Andy Warhol, The Shah of Persia, and President Gerald Ford munching away. (Statesmen were invariably encircled by tables of their security staff). Diners scoffed bangers and mash, while viewing the restaurant’s visual froth, which included socialites, top models and their entourages of fashion designers and fashionable hairdressers.

Once the restaurant opened, if provincials booked a table, thinking they could star spot, they were shoved upstairs to ‘Siberia’, to ogle if they so wished, Patrick Procktor’s freshly painted mural of Venice. The top table, which Peter reserved for his friends was near the entrance, next to one of the big windows in the restaurant. One of the main attractions of the restaurant was Peter himself, who thrived on being an outrageously rude court jester. He revelled in verbally attacking his adoring customers, and behaved like a sexist pig towards his women victims. Funnily enough, trapped diners regarded it an honour if Peter descended on their tables and ruined their meals.

The Sculptor Peter Schleshinger drew a lovely portrait of me in the early Seventies, and the architect who bought it in order to scare his children loaned it to Langan’s. It was shoved at the far end of the restaurant near the library on the ground floor, which gave me a legitimate excuse to ‘see and be seen’, while I table hopped through the restaurant in order to view it, during my days as a gossip columnist. The characters in “Frantic”, my novel about the early Seventies didn’t make a habit of going out to swanky restaurants. That’s because they were holed up in trendy cafes, modelled on the infamous Up All Night in Fulham Road, where wired partygoers used to come down from their drugs. ‘One fading afternoon, in a popular Knightsbridge watering hole, Alice’s pounding head lay submerged in her triple expresso coffee (she had spent a tough night at The Igloo)’ is a quote from “Frantic”, which illustrates the fad for all night cafes during that period. Food didn’t seem to be so popular in those days.

The fodder was definitely the least important thing about Langan’s, although the crème brûlée was divine. It was the best thing on the menu, and one needed a pickaxe to crack the crust. When I interviewed Jackie Collins re: her book “Hollywood Wives”, we consumed crème brûlée for our starter, main course and desert. And, no, we didn’t have the top table. We had the second top one!
